Chapter Seven
Toby hoped Magdelenaâs social this afternoon brought Annie closer to her friends. He had compassion for the Hooks, and their interest in the couple had brought him closer to Magdelena. They both had the desire to help those who might not be easy to like. Most Amish were close, but not with those who were brusque and secretive. Heâd gotten a glimmer of a softer and kinder side of Abram when they practiced archery. For now, he had to convince Zach to respect his and Magdelenaâs wishes. As he came close to the Hiltysâ home, he slowed his mare. He had chosen to visit Zach around seven as Magdelena had suggested.
He pulled over and prayed for God to give him the words to say and to control his frustration. He then proceeded to the haus, tied his mare to the hitching post, and approached Zach on the porch. The big white barn had a fresh coat of paint, and the wraparound porch to the two-story home, which was almost as large as Magdelenaâs home, had an overhang with high posts. In the distance, sows and hogs filled the fenced-in area on the hillside. âBeautiful place your parents have here.â
Zach didnât stand. âIf youâre here to discuss Magdelena, youâre wasting your time. Letâs not argue about this. Our families and I are doing whatâs best for Magdelena. Her daed will need a son to take over the ranch. You canât break the bond of friendship our parents have formed.â
Tobyâs neck hairs prickled. âZach, donât you want to marry for love? There are plenty of available girls for you to wed. You can work at the cattle ranch.â
Zach huffed. âI get it. You want to marry Magdelena and then take over the cattle ranch when Markâs ready to retire. Then what? Iâd work for you? No. I like the plan already in place. You choose one of those available girls and stay away from Magdelena. Youâll never meet Markâs expectations. I do. Accept his decision. You donât have any choice.â
âMagdelena is adamant she wonât marry you. Sheâs rejected you at every turn. Do you want the ranch enough to wed a woman who canât stand you?â He scanned the property. âYou already have a business to run and own when your daed is no longer able to. I donât get it.â
âYou have a simple mind. I have bigger plans. Both places together will bring in a bundle of money, which will benefit both families and our future kinner. Iâll keep a steady staff of dependable and well-trained men to keep the businesses thriving. You shouldâve sealed this deal before I came along.â He smirked.
Toby flexed his hands at his sides. He didnât remember ever getting this angry, and he couldnât let his emotions ruin what he wanted to accomplish. âI donât notice a haus being built for you and Magdelena. If you have the money you claim, why donât you build one? You plan to live with your parents after youâre wed?â
Zach glowered at him.
